For internal students there was no escaping being on campus. A daily round of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, the library and the café could not be avoided. Students inevitably rubbed shoulders with others doing their papers, and with staff. They queued outside staff offices to get advice or to have their essays returned. In an institution that had grown quickly to thousands of students, the campus was bustling, infused with energy and anxiety. Writing might have been a private activity, but study was intensely public.
The contrast with extramural students was dramatic. The Times Literary Supplement in 1973 described Massey’s extramural students as ‘away in the outback with a book-list and some correspondence from their tutors’.371 It was not quite like that, but it was certainly different. One student, Judy Cartwright, who in 1977 enthusiastically mined the extramural material that was sent to her, was aware that all of this university activity was somewhere else as she juggled reading while her preschooler sat on one knee.371b She was able to share in all this engaged activity at the end of the mail drop, and more directly during study courses on campus when the bulk of the internal students were away or in a form of academic hibernation.
For many academics, the debate on the usefulness of extramural education still continued into the 1970s. The real world of the university remained for many academics umbilically tied to the active community on campus, and those who studied out there, unseen, little exposed to lectures and tutorials or laboratories, could never be completely counted as educated. But even the sceptics had to admit that, despite a higher dropout rate, extramural students who did sit the exams had the same 60 per cent pass rate as those privileged to be internal students.
